About our history

45 years of grace

Grace Church in Bukit Mertajam was established on December 14, 1980. The church started meeting in a home. Through God's guidance and continuous evangelism, and growing in God's love, we have grown to today's scale. This is the result of God's grace and the efforts of brothers and sisters. Glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Currently, our church has four full-time pastors serving in the mother church, pastoring and taking care of the spiritual and life needs of the members. We have two pastors serving in Grace Church in Limbang, Sarawak, pastoring the spiritual and life needs of the local indigenous people. In the past twenty years, by the grace of God, we have had the opportunity to support three pastors of the Betong Christian Church in southern Thailand and one pastor in Yala, so that they can continue to serve God and pastor local churches in southern Thailand.

The following are the major historical milestones of Grace Church Bukit Mertajam:

14 December 1980

1980

Grace Church in Bukit Mertajam was officially established on December 14, 1980. From a small house church to a church with five light industrial shops, this is all due to God's grace and guidance.

01 January 1985

1985

The Rumah Kesayangan is a daytime initial care centre for physically and mentally challenged children with special needs. It provides treatment for the challenged children and mental support to their parents, as well as training them to take care of their children.

1991

Grace Bible School was established to help Christians gain comprehensive training in faith through Bible seminars, Bible interpretation courses and short-term training. The Bible School is also committed to training church leaders and co-workers so that they can more effectively apply biblical doctrines in preaching, teaching and counseling. However, due to some reason the ministry has been discontinued.

17 May 2026

1997

The establishment of Kulim Grace Community Center is mainly to provide pastoral care and worship for believers who have to work on Sundays and cannot come to the mother church for gatherings. At the same time, we can also bring the gospel to those in Kulim and surrounding areas who have not yet known the gospel of Christ.

1999

The Jawi Grace Community Centre was established to expand the scope of the church’s service, the ministry has now been diverted to CCMB & Kuala Kurau (Coming Soon).

2000

The "Canaan Community" was established as a ministry dedicated to caring for the elderly. The Canaan Community not only provides accommodation and day care, but also provides a warm home for the elderly in need as well open door of them to know God in their twilight years It is now operating in his new building in Machang Bubuk.

2004

The church began to support missionary work abroad. The church signed a cooperation agreement (MOA) with the Betong Christian Church in southern Thailand, aiming to help the church serve the believers in Betong and spread the gospel to the people in the area by providing financial support and training.

2005

Grace Memorial Park was established. It is a beautiful cemetery for the burial of Christians from Penang and nearby areas.

2011

The church started an outreach point in Butterworth. The purpose is to allow Christians in Penang and Butterworth to lead those who have not yet believed in the Lord to have the opportunity to hear the gospel. However, this ministry was suspended during the MCO period, and only cell group meetings were retained.

2012

The church adopted “ Limbang Love Ministry” in Limbang, Sarawak, and renamed it Limbang Grace Church, an adapted church of Bukit Mertajam Grace Church. This gave the church the opportunity to serve the local indigenous people and preach the gospel to them, so that the local indigenous people could have the opportunity to become children of God and enjoy the abundant life and eternal life in Christ.

Established Young Adult Fellowship – This is a family-style Bible study class exclusively for young professionals. Here, we take the gospel as our foundation, encourage each other, grow together, and let faith take root in our lives.

2025

Kuala Kurau Community Centre. Our centre has been built and is ready for use after obtaining the occupation permit. May God help us. This centre was established to be more effectively lead those who have not yet believed in the Lord in the surrounding areas of Kuala Kurau to know Jesus Christ.

The Way of Grace: A Forty-Five-Year Journey of Faith

After 45 years of ups and downs,Grace Church BMToday, it is not just a local church, but a spiritual home with profound influence. Starting from a small house church, we have experienced many stages of growth and challenges, and today, we have nearly 800 faithful members. We have experienced church relocation, ministry expansion, and close cooperation with churches in various places. In this process, every step of growth and success is inseparable from God's guidance and blessing.

Looking back, we have seen how God has worked in our lives, not only through the leadership of pastors, but also through the enthusiasm and dedication of every brother and sister. Every development and achievement of the church is achieved through faith and prayer. Today's Grace Church is no longer just a gathering place, but a spiritual home full of God's grace and blessings, continuing to bring hope and strength to more people.

We firmly believe that the road ahead is still full of challenges, but we also firmly believe that with God's power and guidance, Grace Church will continue to bring the gospel and change to more people. We thank God for this journey of faith that He has given us, and look forward to more grace and miracles in the days to come.
